Free Workshop: Introduction to Procion Dyeing

  • This is a fun introduction to dyeing fabrics with Procion MX dyes
  • Introduction to the dyeing process and the importance of pure dyes
  • You will learn how to mix the required stock solutions – urea, salt and soda ash solutions
  • You will learn how to mix the dye concentrate solution
  • You will dye 8 fat quarters of fabric
  • We will dye the 3 primaries – Golden Yellow, Cerulean Blue and Magenta – all pure dyes
  • We will then mix the dyes to dye 3 secondary colours – orange, green, purple
  • We will then dye 2 multi-color pieces, using distinctly different methods
  • You will learn how to dye fabric with a little texture, some lovely texture and a very textured finish, almost crystalline effect
  • You will need 2m of PFD (Prepared for Dyeing) fabric – Ruth Wagner of Batiks Australia Online, has PFD fabric for sale: https://batikfabrics.com.au/
  • Ruth will provide a discount code so that you can purchase the fabric at $15/m – choose local delivery and she will deliver the fabric to me in Kingaroy so that you don’t have to pay postage
  • You will receive the discount code and link to the fabric after you enroll in the workshop
  • There will  be a $10 material costs payable on the day of the workshop
  • You will have 2m of beautifully coloured, hand-dyed fabrics to take home at the end of the day

The 3 Primary dyes

  • Golden Yellow – MXGR
  • Blue MXG
  • Magenta – MXB

plus

  • Black – MXRA

3 Secondary Colours

  • You will mix yellow + red to give orange
  • yellow + blue to give green
  • blue + red to give purple or burgundy

You will learn how much of each dye solution to use to get the colours you want 

Note: the purple coloured fabric has the crystalline texture

Multi-coloured Pieces

You will dye 2 multi-coloured fat quarters, using entirely different techniques, to produce fabrics that look like the ones above.

Fabric 1 contains the 3 primary dyes and has black added; Fabric 2 contains only the 3 primary dyes
