Understanding MX Dye Codes
The letters following MX refer to the German names for colours: G for gelb=yellow (think gold); R for rot=red; B for blau=blue. The other letters can be ignored. The numbers in the code refer to the strength of the colour bias.
The importance of this is so that you can see the cast of the colour, eg Blue MXR is a blue with red bias; Blue MXG is a blue with a yellow bias – so you would use Blue MXR if you wanted to produce purples or burgundies; and Blue MXG if you wanted clear greens.
You can also see that Blue MX3R has more of a red cast than Blue MX2R, which again has more of a red cast than Blue MXR.
Combinations of Pure Primary Dyes
| Bright Primaries | Jewel Primaries | Earth Primaries |
| Yellow MX4G | Yellow MX8G | Golden Yellow MXR |
| Red MX8B | Magenta MXB | Red MX5B |
| Blue MX2G | Turquoise MXG | Blue MX2R |
My recommendation is that you buy only these 9 primary dyes, plus Black MXRA (mixed dye from KraftKolour).
I have mixed over 3000 colours with just these 9 primaries.
